There are not many things I enjoy more than snuggling up with my little ones and enjoying a stack of good books, especially when it begins getting cold outside. Since I am a big believer in the importance of reading aloud to children of all ages, I have been compiling lists of our favorite books for different seasons and holidays over the past few years. Today I am sharing some of our favorite books about Thanksgiving!
I currently have a toddler and preschooler, therefore, most of the books on this list are for that age group. However, I have included a few titles that are for older children because I really like them and my kiddos will usually sit through fairly long stories. Also, this list is divided into categories because that’s how I roll…

This First Thanksgiving Day: A Counting Story – Follow Pilgrim and Native American children at they help prepare for the first Thanksgiving. This book also has a few search and find elements to it. See if you can find the turkey on every page!
This is the Feast – This rhyming book will take you along for the Pilgrims’ voyage on the Mayflower, their first year in Plymouth and the first Thanksgiving.
T is for Turkey: A True Thanksgiving Story – A fun alphabet book that follows an elementary school play about all things Thanksgiving.
Best Thanksgiving Book – This book retells the story of the first Thanksgiving while introducing the letters of the alphabet. I believe it is currently out of print, but you can purchase it used or look for it at your local public library.
Thank You, Sarah: The Woman Who Saved Thanksgiving – Maybe a little wordy for little ones, but this is a fun book about the lady who helped make Thanksgiving Day a national holiday. For older children–or kiddos that can sit still through a longer book–I also liked Sarah Gives Thanks.
P is for Pilgrim: A Thanksgiving Alphabet – This book is it great choice if you have a wide range of ages to read to. The little alphabet poems will interest younger ones and it includes a deeper look at historical information for older readers.
One Little, Two Little, Three Little Pilgims – Little ones will enjoy counting Pilgrims and Indians with this rhyming book that also teaches about food they harvested and hunted for the first Thanksgiving dinner.
Thanksgiving Mice! – In this book, cute little mice put on a play to explain the first Thanksgiving Day. Word play and repetition makes this rhyming story enjoyable for kids of all ages.
Books about Gratitude & Giving Thanks
I Will Rejoice – This rhyming book based on Psalm 118:24 is by one of my favorite Christian children’s authors. The illustrations are wonderful and I love that it includes Scripture. Other books in this series are Give Thanks to the Lord (Psalm 92) and Let’s Make a Joyful Noise (Psalm 100).
Thanks for Thanksgiving – A book all about things for which we can be thankful. It also includes space at the back of the book to write down you own gratitude list.
Thanksgiving is for Giving Thanks – Simple text and cheerful illustrations makes this a good book to help little ones learn how to be thankful for everything they see.
The Berenstain Bears Give Thanks – Books in this popular series tend to be a bit long, but my little ones usually enjoy them enough to sit through them. Another related book in this series is The Berenstain Bears Thanksgiving Blessings.
Thanksgiving Graces – A sweet story of a little boy who worries whether there will be enough food for everyone as he watches his family prepare for Thanksgiving dinner and learns the reason we celebrate this special holiday.
Twas the Day after Thanksgiving – A lift-the-flap books that about a little mouse and his family giving thanks for everything that comes after Thanksgiving. I think this may be out of print, so check your local public library!
Frivolous and Funny Thanksgiving Books
I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie – My 4-year-old loves this completely silly book about an old lady that eats the entire Thanksgiving dinner by herself.
Amelia Bedelia Talks Turkey – The kids will love the hilarious antics of Amelia Bedelia as she directs the school’s Thanksgiving play and gets everything all mixed up.
Books about Family Traditions for Thanksgiving
The Night before Thanksgiving – Follow along as a family prepares their hearts and home for celebrating Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving Day At Our House: Thanksgiving Poems for the Very Young – A peek into one family’s holiday traditions starting with a school pageant the day before and ending with a nap after Thanksgiving dinner.
I hope this list gave you a few new books to enjoy this month. I’m sure I missed several titles that are great reads for this age group. Be sure to share you suggestions with me so I can check them out and add them to the list. Happy reading! 🙂
