Since we’ve been getting a lot of rain recently, we did a unit study about rain as part of our homeschool preschool. We kept it very simple, but had quite a bit of fun with it.
One of the most important activities we do for preschool is READ. I believe that reading books to your children–even your baby–is so important. We read a lot of books several times a day, particularly before bedtime and naptime. These are the theme-related books that we enjoyed for this unit study.
As you saw in the video, I helped Claire make little umbrellas out of cupcake liners and pipe cleaners. We then glued them to a piece of paper and drew clouds and rain. This is also when we discussed the letters Rr and Uu and the sounds that they make.
We went outside and played in the rain when it was sprinkling. Splashing and stomping in puddles is a lot of fun and can help them develop their gross motor skills.
We did a simple science activity that demonstrates how rain falls from the clouds. We filled a Mason jar about 2/3 full of water and topped it with a thin layer of shaving cream. Then we carefully poured blue food coloring (drop by drop) onto the shaving cream until it came through and “rained” in the water below.
