Homemaking is much more than cleaning and organizing the house. It is creating a home–a loving home that can be a refuge from the world of chaos that we live in.
“Love begins at home, and it is not how much we do… but how much love we put in that action.” -Mother Teresa
My desire is for more than a tidy, well-organized house. I want my home to be seen as a peaceful sanctuary, overflowing with love and joy. It is our role as a homemaker, wife and mother to set the attitude of the household. Proverbs 14:1 says,
“The wise woman builds her house,
But the foolish tears it down with her own hands.”
Creating a loving atmosphere in our homes begins in our hearts and is then displayed in our actions.
Prayer is a necessity in setting the tone of our home. Not only do we need to dedicate ourselves to the Lord each morning, but we must lift up our family, home and plans to God each day. We can only truly respond in love through Christ.
Our home should not be full of strife. Conflict arises for many different reasons in a house full of fallen people. I have found that following the simple wisdom of Proverbs 15:1 can bring peace in most situations:
“A gentle answer turns away wrath,
But a harsh word stirs up anger.”
Love should be demonstrated in both words and actions in our home. We need to say “I love you” often. Also, discovering our loved ones love language can be very helpful in determining how to best make each family member feel loved.
Finally, we ought to encourage contentment in our home. Finding ways to nurture thanksgiving for the “small blessings” we enjoy each day can be an excellent way to do this. Cultivating gratitude in all circumstances allows us to be joyful.
