I have a love/hate relationship with my kids’ toys. I appreciate the enjoyment they get out of playing with them, but really don’t like the mess they make sometimes. While motherhood has helped me loosen up when it comes to housework, I still prefer a neat and tidy home. So, after living on our house for a little over a year, I decided to turn our extra bedroom into a playroom for the children. I has been a sanity saver for this mama. I love it!
I thought I would share with you three quick tips for making toy organization fairly painless. You can do this when the kiddos are away or asleep if you feel it will lead to a lot of whining and crying. However, if you wish to teach your children the importance of good stewardship and the blessing of contentment and giving things to others, I encourage you to involve them in this endeavor.
How I Organized My Children’s Toys
1. Purge. I went through all of our toys and decluttered, choosing to keep only the favorites (mine and theirs) and set aside the rest to either sell or give away to charity. This is a pretty simple task for me because I purge our play things periodically throughout the year to get rid of broken toys and bring out age-appropriate ones that are stored away.
2. Pile. I separated the toys into groups of like items (i.e. dress up cloths, baby doll items, games, blocks, etc). Then I searched around the house to find bins, baskets and drawers that we weren’t currently using in which to store the items.
3. Place. I found a “home” for every toy, whether it was in a container with other like items or organized neatly on a shelf. At the end of every day, we try to put everything back in it’s place to keep the room tidy. This also allows the children to find a specific toy faster and easier because they know where it should be.

Like I said before, I am in love with this space! And I am especially thankful for the bed we have in there after being so sick last week. I was able to lay down and rest while the girls played with their toys. While we may not keep the playroom forever, it has definitely become one of my favorite rooms in our home for this season of life.
